What golden hour actually is
Golden hour is the period when the sun is between roughly 6ยฐ below the horizon and 6ยฐ above it, producing warm directional light because sunlight travels through more of the atmosphere at low angles. The same scattering that turns sunsets red also turns the light reaching subjects warm and softens shadows. Length depends on latitude and season โ near the equator at the equinox it lasts about 25 minutes, while at northern latitudes in midsummer it can stretch beyond an hour as the sun grazes the horizon at a shallow angle.
The colour temperature of sunlight shifts from roughly 5500K at midday to 3200K or warmer at sunset, which is why faces, foliage and architecture all take on a different character at golden hour. Most cameras' auto white balance will quietly correct that warmth back out; shoot in manual white balance or RAW if you want to preserve it. The trade-off across golden hour is warmth gained for intensity lost โ exposure values fall steeply as the sun sinks toward the horizon, so a tripod becomes useful for anything beyond a quick handheld shot.
Atmospheric scattering, colour temperature, and why hazy days extend the warm window
The reddening at low sun angles is Rayleigh scattering โ short-wavelength (blue) light scatters more than long-wavelength (red) light, and at low angles sunlight travels through far more atmosphere on its way to your camera than it does at noon. Foggy, hazy, or smoky conditions amplify the effect because more particles do more scattering. That's why bushfire skies often hold golden tones for hours past the geometric golden hour.
Light direction matters as much as colour. The low sun angle creates long shadows that pick out three-dimensional texture โ leaves, stone, hair, ripples on water โ which is invisible at noon when shadows fall straight down. Backlit subjects gain rim light at golden hour; front-lit subjects look saturated and warm; side-lit subjects show the strongest texture. None of these are available in midday light.

Blue hour, twilight bands, and the underrated 30 minutes
After the sun sets โ or before it rises โ the sky doesn't switch off. It cools through a sequence of bands. Civil twilight runs to about 6ยฐ below the horizon, nautical to 12ยฐ, astronomical to 18ยฐ. Blue hour sits inside civil twilight, the brief period when the sky takes on a saturated cobalt that's often the most photogenic light of the day, especially for cityscapes where artificial lights balance the ambient sky brightness.
Blue hour lasts about 20 minutes at mid-latitudes around the equinoxes, shorter near the equator, longer at high latitudes in summer. Many landscape and architectural photographers prefer it to golden hour for certain subjects โ the colour contrast between cool sky and warm artificial light produces a look that's much harder to achieve when the sun is up. The light is also flat and shadowless, which can be exactly what an architectural shot needs.
Cloud cover plays a bigger role than most weather apps suggest. Total overcast flattens out both golden and blue hour by blocking the warm afterglow from reaching the sky. A clear sky is reliable but undramatic. The sweet spot is partial cloud โ broken cumulus or high cirrus catches the low sun and amplifies the colour, often producing the most striking skies of the year. The cloud-cover chart on this page colours bars in a warm "ideal" tier between 15% and 65% coverage to flag exactly those conditions; mostly-cloudy and overcast bars in grey and dark slate are honest signals that the light show probably isn't happening.
Civil, nautical, and astronomical twilight โ what each term actually means
Civil twilight ends when the sun is 6ยฐ below the horizon; the horizon is still clearly visible, artificial light is becoming useful, and most outdoor activity remains possible. Nautical twilight ends at 12ยฐ below, when the horizon is just discernible against the sky โ the threshold used historically for marine navigation. Astronomical twilight ends at 18ยฐ below, when the sky is fully dark for the purposes of professional astronomical observation.
For photography, blue hour usually sits between the end of civil twilight and a few minutes either side. You can keep shooting useful long-exposure landscape work through nautical twilight, but contrast and detail drop sharply once you cross into astronomical darkness โ at that point you're doing astrophotography, with a different camera setup and a different set of challenges.

Planning a shoot: sun direction, seasons, and gear
Where the sun rises and sets shifts substantially through the year. At UK latitudes (around 51ยฐN) sunrise moves from due east at the equinoxes to roughly east-northeast in midsummer and east-southeast in midwinter โ a swing of about 80ยฐ. Sunset mirrors it on the western side. That matters when planning a shot of a specific building or landscape feature: a south-facing wall catches direct light in winter but stays in its own shadow at noon in summer, while a north-facing wall sees direct sun only briefly in the early morning and late evening near the summer solstice.
Knowing where the sun will be tells you half the story; the other half is what the sky will be doing. This page brings four tools together for shoot planning. Match that against the compass to choose a vantage point โ south-facing walls light up at midwinter sunset, an east-facing harbour catches midsummer dawn. Check the moon for anything you want included in the composition. Forecast skill drops noticeably past two days, so treat days three to five as a rough sense of the weather pattern rather than a firm plan, and refresh the page before you set out.
Gear that matters at golden and blue hour, and why
A sturdy tripod is the single most useful purchase for low-light golden and blue hour work โ exposures lengthen as light fades, and even modest image stabilisation runs out below about 1/15 second handheld. A neutral density filter lets you stretch exposures to several seconds in remaining light, smoothing water and clouds; a graduated ND filter helps balance bright sky against dark foreground in high-contrast sunrise and sunset scenes.
An intervalometer or in-camera time-lapse mode lets you capture the transition from golden through blue through full dark as a sequence, which is more interesting than any single frame. A wide-aperture prime lens earns its place at blue hour when shutter speeds get long enough that even a still subject starts to register motion. Lens hoods stop flare from the low sun reaching the front element at oblique angles, which is the most common cause of washed-out golden hour shots.
